Countertop Repair and Restoration in Vancouver

Chips, cracks, etch rings, scratches and counters that have simply gone flat. Almost all of it is fixable on the stone you already have, for a fraction of what replacing it costs.

Free estimate, on site, with no obligation.

Repair fixes something missing. Restoration brings back a whole worn surface. Most people need one or the other, plenty need both, and the difference decides how the job is priced and how long it takes.

Chips, cracks and holes

If material is missing from the stone, that is a repair, and it happens before any polishing.

A chip on an edge or a corner from a dropped pan. A crack running out from a sink or a stove cutout, often triggered by heat. The pock marks that open up in travertine as the factory fill works loose. Each gets filled with a resin colour-matched to your stone, deliberately overfilled, cured hard, then ground back flat.

What people do not expect is what happens next. A fresh repair looks new, so if the counter around it has any wear on it at all, the repaired patch ends up looking better than everything beside it. Fixing a crack properly usually means bringing back a wider area, or the whole surface, so it all reads the same. On a newer installation there is less to match.

Full detail on our marble chip and crack repair page, which covers marble, limestone and travertine. Granite has its own repair page, because it is harder and it fails differently.

Marble countertop restoration

When a marble counter has gone dull everywhere rather than in one spot, that is restoration. Years of etching, scratching and use accumulate until the area around the sink and the coffee maker is flatter than the corners nobody touches.

Diamond honing takes the surface down past the damage, then the finish goes back on: polishing powder worked in with water and buffed, or left honed for a matte finish. It is one pass across the whole surface rather than a series of patches.

Etch rings and dull patches

The single most common call we get, and the one most often misdiagnosed. That cloudy ring where a wine glass sat is almost never a stain. Marble is calcium carbonate, so acid takes the finish off in that spot: the colour has not changed, the shine has gone. No cleaner brings it back, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to remove.

Stains that have soaked in

Genuinely different again. Oil, wine, coffee or rust that has gone into the pores and darkened the stone from within. The surface is still glossy, the colour is wrong. That has to be drawn back out with a poultice rather than ground off.

Granite counters

Granite is the toughest stone in most kitchens and it needs less than people assume. It rarely goes dull, it resists acid far better than marble so true etching on it is uncommon, and it rarely stains, though there are exceptions.

Most granite counters want cleaning, polishing and sealing, and nothing heavier. A dull patch on granite is usually fine scratching from an abrasive pad rather than anything chemical. Sealing helps the stone resist staining; it does not make it stain-proof, and it does nothing for etching on any stone.

Granite does not always return to its factory finish. That finish is applied with industrial equipment before the slab reaches your kitchen. Some granites polish back beautifully by hand and some are genuinely difficult, and we will tell you which yours is rather than promising a result the stone may not give.

Limestone and travertine counters

Softer and more porous than marble, so they etch and scratch more easily and they absorb more. Travertine has the extra quirk of natural voids that were filled at the factory and work loose over the years.

Plenty of people are not sure which stone they own, and that is normal. Send a photo and we will tell you before anyone books anything, because the approach genuinely differs and the wrong method on the wrong stone makes things worse.

Our limestone and travertine pages have the detail.

What every countertop job has in common

On timing, honestly: it is job by job. A single chip or a small vanity can be a couple of hours. A large kitchen can run to two days plus a return visit to seal. Bigger jobs mean drop sheets and protection staying down for the duration. Your quote carries the real number before anything starts.

Countertops across Greater Vancouver

We see this work everywhere rather than in one part of town: West Vancouver and the British Properties, North Vancouver, downtown and the West End, Yaletown, Coal Harbour and False Creek, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, Kitsilano and Dunbar, Burnaby, the Tri-Cities, Richmond, Surrey and White Rock.

Character homes tend to have marble installed decades ago that has never been restored. The towers from the 1990s and 2000s have counters now old enough to show it. Strata buildings and hotels have the same stone in common areas and guest bathrooms, taking more use in a month than a home counter sees in a year.

What moves the price: the size of the surface, how bad the damage is, the type of stone and the finish you want. Our pricing page has the breakdown and the minimum service call.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, we cover Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, including North and West Vancouver, Burnaby, the Tri-Cities, Richmond, Surrey and White Rock. Every job is looked at in person before it is quoted, because a crack that looks small in a photograph can run further once someone is standing in front of it. The visit and the written quote are both free.

If something is missing from the stone, a chip, a crack, a hole, that is a repair. If the whole surface has gone dull, scratched or flat, that is restoration. The one that surprises people is that a repair often turns into more than a repair: a fresh fix on a worn counter looks newer than everything around it, so the surrounding area usually needs bringing back too.

No. Stone is solid all the way through, so a chip is damage to one part of a slab rather than a failure of the whole thing. It gets filled with colour-matched resin and finished level with the surface. Replacement is a real question only when a slab is cracked right through, a section has broken away, or the stone is moving because whatever supports it has failed.

No, we work on natural stone only: marble, limestone, travertine, granite, quartzite and terrazzo. Engineered surfaces are manufactured from crushed stone and resin, and they behave differently under everything we would do to them. If you are not certain which you have, send a photo before booking rather than after.

Marble etches: you get dull, cloudy patches from wine, lemon juice or the wrong cleaner, where the shine has gone but the colour has not. Granite very rarely does that, and it is harder and more scratch resistant. A good share of the people who call us about granite turn out to have marble or limestone, so describe the damage when you get in touch and we will usually know from that.

It depends on the size of the counter and how much damage is in it. A single chip or a small vanity can be a couple of hours. A large kitchen can be two days, with a return visit afterwards to seal. Anything bigger means protection staying down for the duration. The work is dust free and done in place, so you are not clearing the room, and the real timeline is in your quote.
