Almost all stone damage can be repaired in place. Etching, scratches, chips, cracks and floors that have lost their lustre are usually a restoration job rather than a replacement job, and restoring costs a fraction of new stone.
We work on natural stone: marble, limestone, travertine, granite, quartzite and terrazzo. Marble is the bulk of it, and the work we are known for.
Most people arrive knowing what the surface is, not what the problem is. If you are not sure whether you are looking at a stain or an etch, start with the diagnosis and work back from there.
Telling a stain from an etch, what is safe to try, and where it stops.
Three groups cover most of what we do. Each one leads to the services underneath it.
Marble, limestone, travertine, granite and terrazzo floors, from a dull entryway to a lobby worn into a grey traffic lane.
Kitchen counters, islands and vanities. Etch rings, scratches, chips and the dull patches around the sink and the coffee maker.
Hotel lobbies and strata buildings, scheduled around the building rather than around us.
Honing takes the damage out with diamonds, then the polish brings the shine back out of the stone itself. Not a product you apply.
The dull ring a glass leaves behind. Damage to the surface rather than a stain, and the call we get more than any other. Scratches come out the same way.
Honing and polishing a marble floor you already have, including lippage where tiles have settled unevenly.
Etch rings, scratches and wear across a whole counter, brought back in place.
Bathrooms are hard on marble. Soap, shampoo and the wrong cleaner do most of the damage.
Sealing helps stone resist staining. It is worth knowing what it does not do, which is stop etching.
Chips, cracks and the holes that open up in travertine. Filled with colour-matched resin, cured, then ground flat. On marble, limestone and travertine, on floors and counters.
Oil, wine, coffee and rust that have soaked in. Drawn back out with a poultice, which is a different job from anything with a machine.
Softer than marble and less forgiving of the wrong approach.
Polishing, and refilling the natural voids that open up as the factory fill works loose.
Granite is hard, and more forgiving than marble: it rarely goes dull and rarely stains. A good share of the people who call about granite turn out to have marble or limestone. Send a photo and you will get a straight answer about which one you have.
Chips on an edge or around the sink cutout, filled with a resin matched to the colour and pattern of the stone and finished level with the surface.
Cleaning, polishing and sealing, which is what most granite counters actually need.
Quotes written so they can go to a council or an AGM, and work scheduled around the building.
We do not sell cleaners or sealers. When a customer asks what to use on their stone, we send them to Bordignon Stone, a local supplier we work with every week. They carry cleaners and sealers that are safe on natural stone, which is the part that matters: most of the etching we are called out to fix was done by the wrong cleaning product.
